HOME GROWN HEAT
Zip are proud to be supporting Irish farmers and caring for the environment too!
The Zip Croi na Tine firelog is made in Ireland from locally grown willow. A native species, willow is planted and harvested on Irish soil, by Irish farmers, using the traditional practice of Coppicing.
Coppicing refers to the regular harvesting, every two or three years, of a tree. The tree is harvested close to the ground during its winter dormancy and the following spring resprouts from the same stool or root, without having to be replanted. It is possible to harvest the willow 8 to 10 times before having to replant the tree.

In Ireland, recent research shows that coppice willow provides one of our most sustainable systems of providing home grown, renewable and carbon neutral fuel. As well as providing clean, sustainable, carbon neutral energy, short rotation coppice willow also provides genuine business opportunities for Irish farmers and their local partners. This is not only helping Ireland environmentally - but also creating and sustaining jobs during an increasingly challenging time.

Key facts about Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) Willow
- Short rotation coppice (SRC) willow is what is known as a biomass crop.
- Biomass is a renewable energy source, commonly plant matter grown with the purpose of generating electricity, or producing heat.
- Biomass crops absorb energy to grow from the sun, which is stored as chemical energy in the plant tissues (stems, stool, roots and leaves), through the process of photosynthesis.
- The willows woody stems represent 60% of the total biomass, the remainder being the stool, the roots and the leaves.
- SRC willow production yields, as with any other crop is determined largely by site and weather conditions. However, yield can be expected to be in the range of 7-12 tonnes of dry matter per hectare per year.
- Willow is not a demanding species in terms of site requirements and will thrive on a wide variety of soil types and in varying environmental conditions.
- In the context of climate and soils, willow (Salix) is the most suitable woody biomass crop for Ireland.
