Building the Perfect Fire

There are only really two ways we've found to build the perfect barbecue fire.

  1. Build you charcoal or briquettes into a large mound, with firelighters spread evenly throughout the mound.  Light the firelighters, and when the firelighters are well lit carefully add more fuel as required, taking care not to extinguish the flames. When the fire is well lit, increase the draft and allow the coals to ash over.  Once they are glowing red and ashed over, evenly spread out the coals before beginning cooking.

Alternatively you can use a chimney starter.

  2. Pile the charcoal or briquettes into the top of the chimney starter. Place a couple of firelighters beneath the chimney amongst a crumpled newspaper  (in the lower chamber). Place on the barbecue tray, light the firelighters through the holes in the bottom chamber walls and allow to stand for 15-20 minutes.  Carefully pour the hot charcoal/briquettes into the barbecue tray.  (Place the chimney on a non-flammable surface after use - and be careful as it will be very hot!)

If you are using a liquid firelighter,  remove all sources of ignition away from the BBQ or outdoor fire. Carefully pour the liquid over the charcoal or wood allowing it to soak in.  Avoid liquid spills or liquid running under the fuel and accumulating.  Replace cap on bottle to engage child resistant closure and move the bottle away to a safe distance from the fire.Carefully ignite the fuel.  When the fire is well lit, add charcoal or wood as required taking care not to extinguish the flames.
