Where to put your BBQ

BBQs need to be positioned on a solid, flat surface, away from fences and wooden sheds and also protected from the wind or a draught.

Allow plenty of space around the BBQ and finally avoid placing too near shrubs and other plants which could be damaged by the heat.

Deterring uninvited guests

Keep your guests away from the more fragrant flowers of your garden as insects  are drawn to them - they will also be drawn to perfumes, hairspray and aftershave - so use them sparingly! 

Bright colours also attract insects - so tone down your colour scheme.  Wasps are also particularly drawn to yellow - so avoid this where you can.

You can also use these tips to draw insects away from your guests - if you put a dish of jam or beer at the opposite end  of the garden the insects will be attracted there instead of to your food!

Use Zip citronella candles - but if you can't get hold of these use garlic in your cooking and decorate your table with fresh lavender as insects do not like these pungent smells and will stay away.
